Thoughts from a hospice nurse:I attended a patient’s funeral the other day. I sat in the pew next to our social worker and listened to the patient’s stories of life as told by family and friends. People expressed joyful and funny stories. At the conclusion of the service, family came down the aisle first, as they generally do. I was sitting toward the back of the chapel as the patient’s spouse walked toward the door. He started to cry and looked up into my eyes. I reached out to him and we embraced each other. My hug seemed to last several minutes, I told him we loved him, and I was able to console him. I was glad I had been sitting in that particular seat when he needed someone. After all, it is my job as a hospice nurse to support families. What I felt and realized that day, among many other days, with many other patients and families, was that he had given me a gift I will treasure always… the feeling of being a part of someone’s family… of being loved. |
